How to Open External Hard Drive on Surface Pro

Voun Tia

Hi Jose,

Using an external hard drive with its own power source is a good way to resolve under powered external hard drive issues. An outdated driver is also a possible cause for this problem. To assist you better, please provide the following information:

  • Have you checked if the USB port works fine with other devices and confirmed that the USB external drive works on other devices as well?
  • Have you tried using the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter? If not, here's how:
  1. Press Windows key + Q.
  2. Type in Troubleshooting in the search box.
  3. Tap on Troubleshooting.
  4. Choose Hardware and Sound from the window that opens.
  5. Tap on Hardware and Devices.
  6. Click Next and follow the prompts.
  • What happens if you reinstall the USB drivers? To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Disconnect the USB external drive from your Surface.
  2. Press Windows + X key and select Device Manager.
  3. Locate the USB driver (Universal Serial Bus controller).
  4. Right-click on the Intel(R) USB 3.0 driver icon and select Uninstall.
  5. Restart the Surface. After restarting the computer, the USB driver will automatically reinstall.
  6. Reconnect the external hard drive through the USB and see if it responds now. If not, go on to the next step.

Give us an update, and let us know if you encounter any errors.

Regards.

Before you try to retrieve the data on your hard drive, we suggest that you verify if it's still working. If you have another Surface or if you can borrow a friend's computer, that would be a good way to check if you can still access the files on your external hard drive. If it still won't work, we recommend that you contact the hard drive manufacturer for the best options how to retrieve your files.

Let us know if you have any additional concerns.

Regards.
